Parametric modeling technology, as a popular CAD technology which has now been widely used in enterprises, adopts a pre-defined feature prototype including some engineering semantics as the base of parts modeling. So the efficiency and quality of parts modeling is decided by the variety, number and integration degree of the feature prototype. Pro/Engineer is a kind of automated mechanical design software based on parametric feature modeling technology and has been widely applied in manufacturing enterprises. But so far the number and kinds of feature provided by Pro-Engineer are very limited. The parametric feature models for standardized and commonly used components are very insufficient and such part function and structure features as holes and slots are more insufficient. So there are problems such as low modeling efficiency, little repetitive use of design, bad model specification and less engineering semantic. So the paper proposed the idea of establishing parametric feature library.The thesis analyses the trends of domestic and international CAD technology, theory of parameter technology and the current research situation, and the current situation of Pro/Engineer's secondary development as well. On this foundation, the paper discusses the strategy of building parametric feature library, the structure and developing method of parametric feature library, as well as how to fully use the function of Pro/Engineer's secondary development tool such as Pro/Program, Pro/Toolkit and Family Table to carry on the research and development of parameter design . Using Pro/Program to carry on the parameter modeling has some directive significance to automated modeling of all kinds of complicated parts. On this basis, with the application of Pro/Toolkit and VC ++6.0 programming environment, modeling systems of parameter can be developed. This system has intuitive, friendly dialog box interfaces, includes different kinds of parametric feature prototype, and can generate the corresponding 3D model just needing to input some basic parameters. So it greatly improves the efficiency of using Pro/Engineer modeling.
