Most of the historic buildings with a long history in our country are the stone historic buildings. By contrast with soil and wood, the stone has an advantaged predominance in quality of a material. However, the stone historic buildings still inevitably emerge various breakages under the influences of natural processes and human activities. Therefore, it is an emergency to research the protection on the stone historic buildings. At present, some methods of protection on the ancient stone bridge were proposed and were used in actual. But these methods exists a certain of limitations. The specific measures and methods of protection and strengthening in the ancient stone bridge with instance are discussed. The feasibilities and the protection effect of them are also argued.The origin, development, type, structure form and building construction methods of the ancient bridges are introduced in detail. The diseases and causes of formation existing in the stone historic buildings are analyzed in detail. Based on the analysis of the destructive form and cause, the corresponding material protection and strengthening are proposed. The protection and strengthening of a single-span stone arch bridge in Three Gorge is fulfilled. The feasibilities of the measure and the method of protection and strengthening in actual project are evaluated.According to the structure and mechanics characteristic, the FEM analytical model is established. By the numerical value calculation, the mechanics characteristic and the distortion capacity of the bridge under the deadweight static load are studied. The easiest destructive position and state of the single-span ancient stone bridge are obtained. The academic bases and actual referenced advices to the protection and strengthening of ancient stone bridge are put forward.The results of the research show after the strengthening, the diseases of the stone bridge have a better repair and the bridge structure has also strengthened. It also has some use for reference meaning to the strengthening of other ancient stone bridge.
