This paper is based on research and development of the SFM210 system from Siemens. The object of the paper is how to build a reliable and high speed network communication network between and how to confirm the reliability of the system.The SFM210 system requires high reliability. There are two designing cases for reliability: fault avoiding and fault-tolerance. Fault-tolerance will improve reliability from the structure of system. It is a feasible plan of reliable system design facing application. And so using fault-tolerance to design the system is an effective way to improve reliability of system.The paper firstly introduces the CAN field bus, including the developing history and the current situation. And the paper also introduces the communication protocol of CAN.The paper secondly introduces the module designation of the system. The whole system introduces SFM210XX, SFM230 and SFM640 I/O planks and SFM614 communication controller. The I/O planks are connected with the SFM614 with two CAN field buses, so that the communication is guaranteed. The reliability is based on the module level redundancy which improves the reliability of the system.The remote surveillance system is widely used. Combined CAN field bus with Internet, the local intelligent controller can spread to the Internet. The application of CAN field bus simplifies the traditional plan, and it can control, monitor and manage all the module only by two field buses. The technique of Internet spreads the local control to the network, and we can control the surveillance equipments by Internet. The paper introduces a communication controller--SFM614, which is based on CAN field bus and Internet. The software and hardware of SFM614 are explained in details in the paper. The main chip is Atmega128 MCU (micro controller unit). The software programming has transplanted embedded real-time operating system Nut/OS, on which communication application software design is based.
