In this thesis the potential distribution of ZnO surge arrester is studied by using Ansoft Maxwell Numerical Analysis Software. The outline of this dissertation is as following:(1) The influence of different tower models on single 220kV suspended-type ZnO surge arrester potential distribution is researched; on the basis of the tower model the potential distribution of the surge arrester in three phases running state is studied. Factors affecting the voltage distribution ratios of the surge arrester have been investigated, including tower, voltage phase of transmission line, lengh of the wire, arrester installation sites and so on.(2) Numerical calculation of potential distribution of 330kV substation ZnO surge arrester is studied. Firstly the potential distribution of surge arrester between the axisymmetrical finite element model and 3D finite element model are compared. Then 3D finite element model of 330kV substation ZnO surge arrester in three phases running state is created and the potential distribution is analyzed, while the influences of voltage phase of transmission line, high voltage wire, phase spacing, array configuration of the arrester are considered..(3) Many factors influencing on the potential distribution of 1000kV ZnO surge arrester are researched. Firstly factors affecting the voltage distribution ratios of surge arrester including relative permittivity of ZnO varistor, radius and height of the grading ring, the height of installation, and array mode of ZnO varistor have been investigated. Then an appropriate configuration of 1000kV ZnO surge arrester is suggested. Finally the electric field distribution around the surge arrester is given.
