Face gear drives, declared in last century 40 years and developing in the recent years, is a new type of gear drives compared with other traditional gear drives in many areas. Overseas scholars including Litvin had contributed to the development of face gear drives, and found out that face gear drives have many advantages applied in helicopter transmissions. In mainland, face gear drives were studied little, and almost were not used actually. So it is important to research face gear drives for the development of the gear drives. This paper researches modeling and meshing analysis about face gear drives composed of a face gear and a spur involute pinion, which covered digital tooth surface, simulation, meshing and finite analysis. The research of this paper applies CAD, FORTRAN, differential geometry, meshing and finite theory. There are two ways of face gear modeling. One way is called geometrical method, which establishes meshing equation by differential geometry and meshing theory for obtaining the equation of face gear, and uses digital theory to establish digital tooth surface of face gear. The other one is called direct simulation method, which is subdivided into two methods. The first one creates a gear model on the AutoCAD platform with specific emphasis on AutoLISP programs. The other one, which is a new method of face gear digital simulation called the characteristic line method, predigests the Boolean calculation, and constructs the system of simulation using FORTRAN.Meshing analysis of face gear has two parts. One part is the analysis of misaligned errors, which uses TCA theory to research the location of the contact path on the tooth surface, and calculates the transmission error, aiming to regulate the installation of face gear. The other part is the analysis of static meshing of a pair of tooth, which investigates a pair of teeth using finite element method, including modeling, constructing element and integer flexibility matrix, confirming the location of the contact path, loading and digital solution.
