According to the basic principles of economic land-use, wall innovation, conservation of building energy and reuse of industry waste, residence system of RC frame structure with special-shaped columns is developed. Its building function is prior to that of RC frame structure with rectangle columns and has a technical and economic potential.Recently, a lot of RC frame structures with special-shaped columns have been built in our country. At present,the study of special-shaped columns is systemic and perfect,but that of seismic performance for RC frame with special-shaped columns is not in-depth. However, lack of systematic study in this field limits its wide application to a large degree. In concert with the development of national technical specification for Reinforced Concrete Structures with Special-shaped Columns,and for the purpose of further investigation on the seismic performance of such structure, a two-span and three-story RC frame model with special-shaped columns was designed for 1/3 scale. Based on experiment of the frame model under low-reversed cyclic loading and elastic-plastic analysis, failure mode and characteristic, bearing capacity, deformability, ductility, energy dissipation, hysteresis behavior, and rigidity degeneration are studied systematically.The experimental results and studies show that the RC frame with special-shaped columns has good ductility, energy dissipation,deformability and collapse mode. As a result, this style of structures designed rationally has good seismic behaviors.
