Design/build is being received much attention from both the prefession and academia in recent years. Hands-on approaches to pedagogy in the form of full-scale or large-scale construction exercises have emerged in schools across some countries-America and Germany, for example. Some achievements have been got through international conferences and cases teaching experiment. In China, about ten schools of architecture have design/build programs which are in the process of exploration. There seems to be much deference in pedagogical approaches and teaching purposes, but the incorporation of design/build pedagogy in architectural curriculum has an important meaning, it plays an essential role in bridging design and construction, it diminishes the very real gaps between"Learning by drawing"and"Learning by building". The design/build teaching means a program to design and build real buildings in an academic context. Design/build programs present an alternative method for architectural education through the Hands-on experience in construction projects.Design/build has been used as a kind of experimental and practical teaching method,there is no systematic studying and arrangement now except that design/build is an expermental teaching in some schools in China. The dissertation has an studying of design/build for the first time.The dissertation has total five chapters.Based on the think of the definition about Design/build teaching, the author summarizes the application and development of design/build in architectural education. With the studying of Architectural education history and design/build teaching cases, some key questions have been elaborated about the teaching background, teaching purpose, design/build project types etc.Through a case of design/build teaching,the author had an experience about the process of design/build, then an studying and evaluation has been given. Finally, some opinions have been elaborated about the incorporation of design/build pedagogy in architectural curriculum in introductory design training.The dissertation not only values the theoretical analysis, but also emphasizes the the incorporation of theories in practice.Total words: 54,800 words, with 115 illustrations.
