With the advancement of Chinese quality education, more researches and explorations on quality education theories are being carried out by the education circles, and many educators of middle and primary schools are also utilizing various education modes for quality education into practice. Though the education circles are actively exploring the quality education, the researches on school space environments that adapt to the quality education are relatively lagging behind. In addition, with the progress of urbanization, a group of new primary and middle schools emerge in cities. However, the teaching space patterns of these so-called "new schools adapting to the quality education" still apply the old organization forms, which are not designed and built according to the actual requirements, specific teaching forms and teaching characteristics of quality education. On the contrary, new school building forms are constantly showing up in foreign countries, which have great breakthrough in both architectural pattern and construction space. Consequently, the gap between domestic and foreign education buildings is widening. In view of this, the author selected the teaching space of urban primary school as the research object. Based on the field research, and with "the basic teaching unit" as the breakthrough point, this paper summarized the problems of the primary school's teaching space, analyzed foreign advanced experience from the micro to macro perspective, and explored the causes of huge differences in the teaching space forms at home and abroad. Moreover, through the researches and relevant literature, the author combed the competence—oriented education and its main teaching forms, and explored the design of "basic teaching unit" that adapt to it.
