Nowadays those new urban employee residences built decades ago have appeared to have been out of action both in appearance and the function as well as quality inside rooms to the different extent, which brings many inconveniences for the dwellers in life and work. In addition, because technical measures of heat preservation and insulation were not taken when the surrounding structures were designed, air-conditioners and heaters have to be turned on to remain the temperature and humidity in rooms to dismiss hot summers as well as freezing winters. Therefore due to the lack of technical measures, the energy consumption, the environment and the microclimate of constructions have been badly affected, which resulted in the vicious circle of energy between inside and outside of rooms. At present according to the related statistics, the total building area in Shanghai amounts to 515 million square meters, among which the residential building area reaches about 380 million square meters. While in such existing residential buildings there are more than 95% of them, which are highly energy-consuming. Mostly the urban employee residences were built in 1970's and 1980's. Due to the limitation of China's economy at that time, the applied standards were quite low indeed compared with the present standards. With the development of people's living standards, this sort of old buildings remains to be renewed as well as reconstructed. There have been ways of investigation such as inquisition about materials, interviews, researches, by which the program on the alteration of existing residential buildings in Shanghai recently has been studied. Especially the high-storeyed residences of De Yi Centre on Chang De Road have been focused in terms of energy-saving technology and economical aspect. It is not hard tell that the alteration of existing residential buildings has developed from the pure flat-to-sloping roof conversion to the energy-saving integrated alteration, which does not mean that it is just the simple alteration instead of integrated alteration of being energy-saving, waste disposal-reducing as well as the improvement of peoples' living environment. With the help of the analysis on the process from the project of flat-to-sloping roof conversion to today's integrated alteration, the paper presents its goal as the summary of the appropriate application of the energy-saving technology for the surrounding structures in the existing residential buildings in Shanghai. There are three energy-saving sample programs studied emphatically in this research in Shanghai, analyzing the energy-saving alteration from the aspect of economical point. According to the current integrated alteration of flat-to-sloping roof conversion, the suggestion is proposed that the energy-saving alteration of the existing residential buildings should go with the integrated alteration of flat-to-sloping roof conversion. At the end of the paper there is an outlook for the integrated energy-saving alteration of the existing residential buildings.
