In electric power system, insufficient or surplus reactive power will affect the quality of the supplied power severely. By appropriate compensation, the power factor of the system is kept at a higher level to improve the quality of the system. The reactive power compensation technique is one of the major researches. As the advance and development of the technique, the reactive power which various device need increase continuously and the reactive power distributed in the power network become more complicated, so the requirement to the reactive power become higher and higher. Many existed methods of reactive power compensation and equipment become not fit for the need of the development. This paper proposes magnetic-valve controllable reactor reactive power compensation equipment based on DSP. It can compensate the system reactive power quickly according to the reactive condition to improve the stability of the system and keep the given power factor.This paper gives a detailed analysis of the magnetic-valve controllable reactor. The reactor's mathematic model is built and the harmonic character and the control character of MCR are analyzed according to the model. In the practical application of the MCR, the reactive power needs to be detected quickly to realize auto control. This paper introduces the compensation principle and the common methods of reactive power detection. The method of instantaneous reactive power detection is introduced emphatically. The method is quick in detection and the detection variables are less, so its real-time feature is better. The loop-locked PID control method is adopted in the control strategy to make the power factor of the system achieve the appointed one. The compensation equipment which is based on DSP(TMS320LF2407A) as control slug is designed to against the defect which existed in the conventional control slug made of single chip processor. The signal modulate circuit, the synchronous circuit, the sample circuit, the trigger circuit, the power-fall mode and the man-machine interface and so on are introduced. The software flow of the control system is also introduced simply. At last, the paper gives a simulation for the proposed the compensation model by the PSB model in Matlab software. The result of the simulation is consistent with the theoretical analysis to verifier that the proposed reactive power compensation device is correct and of utility.
