Along with the large-oriented of container vessels, quay wall elevation has been becoming higher and higher, and working load increases continually. Control measures of gravity wharf bedding stress and ground bearing capacity make great impact upon project cost. In the second phase of Nansha port project, there are six 50,000 dwt berths, the hydro-structure of quay is designed according to the situation of berthing 100,000 dwt container vessels and reserved according to the situation of loading 12500TEU container vessels. The ground soil layer in Nansha region is complex, the supporting course embedded under the ground deeply, part of it is soft alternated with hard soil layer. According to the characteristics of the second phase project and the technical problems in the course of construction, this paper does some research on the quay structure optimization in the project. Some research productions, such as backfill technique of the caissons' cell next to the sea, optimization of foundation trench excavating depth when the ground is soft alternated with hard soil layer, the checking criterion of desilting deep foundation trench and control technique of breast wall crack, have been used in the construction successfully. With these techniques, it can save project investment greatly, shorten the project period effectively and yield remarkable economic returns. At the same time, it resolves the construction technical problems, such as techniques of desilting deep foundation trench and crack control of breast wall. It's valuable for the design of gravity wharf project.
