The Latent Rules Of Space

With the arrival of Information Era, the overrun of consumption cultures, the transition of social modes, traditional architecture confronts huge challenge. The credo of"forms follow functions"has been replaced by"forms follow capitals","solidity, utility, beauty"has become non-sense in the commodity society. The space of cities can be used for more and more utilities in a small size. The evaluation standard of buildings is their space value. A demolishment would be happened when the value of architectural space under the value of space occupied by the building. None of buildings could exist forever, which makes conflicts with the traditional view of architecture, and even somebody had said: architecture has been dead.So, how to improve the social value of architectural space, how to extend the usage period of buildings, and how to avoid the repeated wastes of social resource? This dissertation tends to go back to the basis of architecture– space, and combine with the sociological knowledge to answer this question.The dissertation can be sorted into four parts: the research of space theory, the research of space practice, the research of space evaluation methods, and the validation of the availability of space. Each of the four parts is related closely to each other and they cannot be considered solely. Consequently, this dissertation's writing method is one by one and part by part, with document research method and synthetic induction method meanwhile. On the basis of research on the spatial theory, the writer focuses on the social attribute of space and the different social-level of functional space in everyday life in order to deduce the universal availability of space towards it. After that, the writer develops a detailed method to quantify the social-level of spaces, and use it in diverse evaluations and testifications on the availability of different functional spaces.The dissertation attempts to watch and research architectural spaces from a new angle– the sociality. It relates with the theories and knowledge of multi-disciplines and tends to extend the boundary of current architecture. Meanwhile, the research tends to have a universal significance and value through the fusion of sociality and availability of space. Furthermore, it also attempts to establish the evaluation standards into social-level of space, and develops corresponding evaluation methods on the availability of space. It helps designers innovate the space organization and achieve benefits from different informal behaviors taking in space when the social values of space are taking into account.Above all, the final aim that the dissertation selects social attributes as its research cut-in is to refresh the idea about architectural space and direct us to innovate rationally in the architectural design process and present more excellent works to the society and the public.
