Tool management system plays a significant role in FMS. Its main function is presiding over the transportation, storage and management of tools. It provides tools in time for process units when they need. It monitors and controls the use of tools, and, takes the tools which have been discarded or whose endurance has been exhausted away in time. It can assure regular production, at the same time, it reduces tools'cost in the greatest extent. The function and flexibility degree of the tool management system directly affect the flexibility and production efficiency of the whole FMS. With the introducing of open architecture, and, deepening and widening of CIMS concept, it has very important actual applied value that we develop tool management system that has complete function, good recombination and powerful transportability.At present, Multi-Agent technology is the hotspot of artificial intelligence domain. It has a unique advantage for solving complex problems with space distribution characteristic. It is a method with important research significance and applied value. We combine Multi-Agent technology with tool scheduling system, and decompose complex tasks to simple unite modules by making use of the distributed solution characteristic of Multi-Agent system. They accomplish the task together through coordination and collaboration. So it reduces complexity of single scheduling system.Based on introducing existing state of tool management study at home and abroad, the paper fully analyses agent, Multi-Agent, configuration of tool management system, operational process of tool scheduling and scheduling strategy. And the paper founds tool scheduling model based on Multi-Agent. The paper founds tool database and makes a brief design about software of tool management system. The main research is described as follows:⑴The paper introduces systematically the concept, attribute and structure of agent and Multi-Agent system, and, communication and synergism between agents. So we establish the theoretical foundation for scheduling system based on Multi-Agent technology.⑵This paper studys on the configuration and strategy of tool scheduling system in FMS, establishes the mathematical model of tool distribution and tool dispatching. On this basis, the paper applies Multi-Agent technology to the scheduling system tool, establishes tool scheduling model based on the blackboard mechanism, and establishes communication and cooperation mechanism between agents in tool management system. ⑶In this paper, we make a brief introduction to database technology, then establishe tool database, including the design of concept structure and logical structure of tool database. The paper uses relational data structure, establishes tool database with Microsoft Access2000, and combines database with object-oriented programming.⑷In this paper, we make a comprehensive research on tool management, divide the functional modules, and we have completed some program with Visual C++, the system has interactive interface, good maintainability and extensibility.
