Mordernization, that spreading over the whole world, has not only been a simple activity in economy, but developed basicly into a culture movement. Being one of the important component parts of culture, modern architecture has deeply influenced in this movement. Although in a sense it is the successful creation of mankind in architecture sphere, modern architecture fails to set up a coherence between the international technique of expression and the cultural implication of a certain place. This causes the loss of the cultural meaning in modern architecture. Since 1980s, architectural academic circles in china has faced a good deal of problems, such as the less development of theories, the lack of technique in expression, the loss of certain cultural tradition and regional character under the purpose of being modern, and the payment for the sacrifice of environmental interest, in the process of social development. Being an objective reality, cultural meaning in architectural creation is in need of its own theoretic system in order to fit in with the global cultural exchange. It is necessarily demanded by the times that a serious mind should be kept in order to find a new train of thought for the architectural development in china.Referring to the problems of present architecture creation, this paper has summarized the various contradictions in modern architecture through culture discussion. It has analyzed the essential meaning of architecture, the cultural expression of building and city, the internal relations between building and environment, and the expression of architecture and regional culture, through applying the view points of humanism, geography and cultural communication, with the view to improve the cultural taste, enrich the technique as well as the theory, and study tentatively the cultural meaning in architectural creation.
