Presently, the quantity of vehicles is increasing rapidly,which has brought many difficult problems of the traffic control.In order to solve them, ITS(Intelligent Transportation System) came into being and becomes one of hot spots on the international road traffic and transportation science research . ITS is a large-scale system which integrate multi subjects and technologies.Lately,the research of inducing mobile GIS technology into ITS becomes a trend on the ITS developement.Aimmimg at the trend,the paper adopts the mobile GIS technology to solve the problems about vehicles' navigation and monitoring. This paper studies some key technologies correlative to mobile GIS,such as GPS, GPRS etc.,and analyzes the principles and characteristics of these technologies.based on the theory researches, this paper proposes a system design schema of moblie GIS and designs the vehicle terminal according to the schema,which includes the design of hardware system and software system.In the design of hardware system,the paper selects the corresponding type for each harsware module.Then,in the design of software system,the paper designs several main modules,including the transplant of the embedded operating systemμC/OS- II,the interception of the the satellite positioning data, the data communication and the man-machine interaction.Besides, this paper proposes a wireless automatic method of vehicle terminal's program renew to solve some shortages,such as low working efficiency, easy to omission etc.At present, this system has already succeeded in applying to some taxi companies in Chengdu.The testing showes that the system running is stable and normal,meetting the design requirements. So the research of the paper advances the farther application of the mobile GIS in ITS and brings certain economic and social benefit.
