Congestion in urban traffic is a problem commonly concerned around the world, and theharmful results that produce are increasingly affecting our daily life and the development ofour society. As the distributing center of urban traffic, intersections are the main taches thatcaused congestion, and rationally controlling the traffic flow in the intersection is not only animportant method to relieve the traffic congestion but also a key respect to study urban traffic. As the important part of urban traffic network, the arterial traffic affects the whole urbantraffic. In this paper, urban traffic signal control is studied, and urban arterial traffic signalcoordination control is mainly studied.Firstly, the basic theory of traffic signal control is discussed. And the modeling course, timing optimization and system performance of three typical traffic signal control system isstudied. Then urban arterial traffic signal coordination control is mainly studied. In summingup the characters and shortage of exist methods, a new coordination control method ispresented, which is to minimize the delay of vehicles in the artery. Then a dynamicoptimization and control model which adopts offset as variables for an urban bidirectionalartery system is established. Besides, the character of traffic flow in over-saturation is analsized, and an arterial coordination control model is established which is used inover-saturation traffic condition. In the model the relation of offset and green time isconsidered. Finally, a simulation is conducted in a dynamic traffic demand mode by usinggenetic algorithm in Matlab, which run for 10 cycles in normal traffic condition. Theoptimized offset and delay is presented and the performance of vehicles delay in this methodand timing control method is analyzed. The result shows the delay after optimized is less thanin timing control obviously, which proves the method is efficiency. Moreover, only an offset and fit function (total delay) is needed in thebidirectional-green-wave control method of the paper, which makes the boundary of arterycontrol and whole urban traffic control is not obvious. So the method in the paper can beexpected to be used solving the whole urban traffic coordination control.
