With the rapid increase of traffic volume and the accumulation of natural damage of structure materials, many bridges in existence can not meet modern traffic development so that they need proper repair and rehabilitation .The dissertation comes from a research project on highway network rebuilding under the background of Chinese Western Development. It mainly involves damages of bridges, strategy of enhancing and the optimal choice of rebuilding schemes on worn bridges. The research thread is 'Damage analysis of bridges—study of rebuilding schemes—formation of optional rebuilding schemes on worn bridges—optimal choice of rebuilding schemes'. In aspect of damage, the focus is cracking, mainly on the classification, the causes and the behavior of diversiform cracks. In aspect of rebuilding schemes, lots of multiform schemes in common use are proposed with their sketches. Then follows the analysis of rebuilding schemes and the optimal choice of the optional schemes; In line with the rehabilitation principles on bridge structures, the formation of rebuilding schemes and the sequential optimal choice are fully discussed. The former is to set the failure criteria according to reliability theory for deciding if a worn bridge is worthy of rebuilding through the economic analysis, And the latter is to decide the best scheme from many choices by application of systemic fuzzy theory about optimal option. The theory of optimal option shows some practicability and creativity.
