Shanxi merchants is an influential group in the modern history of China. And the mansions left in their hometown give a truthful account of their development history, which not only are the signs of wealthy and status, but also reveal the hardship they experienced and the unique Shanxi merchant culture. Just through these preserved mansions, we can get knowledge of Shanxi merchants and the unique merchant culture. It is better for us to comprehend the causes and elements of the culture as well. So it is very important and necessary to preserve the valuable cultural heritage. With flourishing of tourism, more and more ancient buildings have been developed, which greatly promote the local economical development, especially in undeveloped areas, but destroy many rare buildings with scientific, historical and cultural research values as well as a result of massive and excessive developing. The condition is what we are worried about on the Chinese ancient building developing and preservation. How to preserve, how to develop, how to compromise between preservation and developing, how to reasonably develop the valuable buildings and at the same time preserve the various values , are hard nuts to crack in preserving ancient buildings.Presently, enormous amount of ancient buildings have been developed for tourism. Mansions of Shanxi merchants are no exception. There are five such mansions have been restored and opened to tourists respectively since the end of 1980s. They are mansion of family Qiao in Yangjiabu, county Qi; mansion of family Cao in Beiguang, Taigu; mansion of family Wang in Jingsheng, Lingshi; mansion of family Chang in Chemang,Dongyang of Yuci city. However we found that lots of precious ancient buildings with scientific, historical and cultural research values have been destroyed and damaged due to lack of effective preservation. Some officials are anxious to get quick results and instant profits and lack of the awareness pf historical relics protection. The people who are in charge of developing ancient buildings do not follow the principle of historical relics protection - restore as it was. They only want to create " fake antiques " to attract more tourists and get more profit regardless of realizing the value of ancient buildings. This attitude is quite popular and results in disastrous effect on some rare valuable ancient buildings which can not been recovered any more.Taking developing of family Chang's mansion as example, the thesis analysis and compare the mansion of family Chang's original condition and the current condition after developing based on the problems mentioned above. And it also study the conflicts between ancient building protection and developing. Moreover, some solutions to the conflicts are presented in the thesis as well. Really hope this thesis can make contributions to Chinese ancient buildings protection...
