The Chinese ancient building culture is organic component of the Chinese traditional culture. The Grand Courtyard of the Chang Family in Shanxi province is one of the typical northern china residences with styles of Ming and Qing dynasty. The Courtyard building structures embody one of general features of Chinese ancient building culture, wood build structures. The courtyard is one of rare park buildings in north of china, especially the magnificence and spectacularity in the building scope makes it head of residence buildings in Shanxi province. In this thesis we systematically studied the art of the Grant courtyard buildings based on some formal research results and supplemented the research shortcomings. And there are six chapters in this thesis.Chapter I gives a general introduction of the Courtyard of the Chang Family. In this chapter the whole building scope, era, location and layout are precisely introduced. In chapter II, by using of analyze methods of aesthetics and architectural history we discussed the architecture surroundings. From the point of building structure, the construct of gates, windows, pavilions and kiosks reflect the beauty of both artificiality and nature. From the view of park, not only the graceful ten acres of almonds, all kinds of rare stones but also the flourishing woods all reappear the booming of nature and cause people associate with good things, which also reflect the host's feelings and eagerness to an ideal state. In chapter III, according to the collected pictures we analyzed the building decoration and characteristics of the Courtyard of the Chang Family based on the differences in the building decoration appearances and organization formats. Chapter IV investigates the Courtyard's design technique of the Chang Family by use of the design principles. In chapter V we track down Chinese traditional philosophy thought which deeply permeated in every stone and brick from the sides of Confucian and Taoist, from which we can get a feeling of the deep insight of the traditional culture. Finally in chapter VI, by analyzing and summery the above-mentioned problems in architecture art of the Courtyard of the Chang Family we can make clear of some concrete problems and draw some inspiration and enlighten to modern architectures.According to the analysis and discussions of above-mentioned six aspects, we want to get a overall and complete understanding to the space special features of Shanxi merchant residence buildings through viewpoint of the Courtyard of the Chang Family.
