Combined with the national 863 project "A Collaborative system for product design, manufacturing and measurement based on the SML-ProNet (No. 2005AA411910) " and major research project of Zhejiang "Research on Product Design and Product Management Information System for Quick Respond Customer Demand and its applying in Auto part (No. 2004C11004)", The methodology for part process modeling supporting process variant design and the key issues in process variant design based on SML are investigated. In the paper, the definition of manufacturing features are made. Base on manufacturing features and SML, the methods and technology for part process modeling are introduced., whicn includes manufacturing process and working process cards, and supports variant design. A system for process variant design is developed.Chapter 1 introduces the research status of process modeling and process variant design on both home and abroad, explain that the process modeling and process variant design based on SML haven't been far-ranging researched. Then point out the target and meanings for the article. Finally, the main content of this dissertation and the structure have been established.Chapter 2 discusses the technologies of process variant design as a whole, including the principle of part variant and process variant, indicates the process variant of part can be seen as the together of manufacturing features' .The key issues for process variant design have been brief discussed.Chapter 3 is about the process variant design of manufacturing features. After analyzing the process of the part features, established the process model and SML for features, then realizes the process variant of the features. Based on the process variant of features, the course of part process variant is pointed out.Chapter 4 is to solve the process modeling and process variant based on part features. The process modeling includes manufacturing process and working procedure modeling. To solve this problem, a converse-assemble model has been investigated. In this model, the manufacturing process can be denoted as the converse sequence of the assembled features. Also the process model and SML for part are established which support the process variant design. Then the process variant is realized by using SML and process model.Chapter 5 discusses the system's develop methods and the application example.Chapter 6, summarize and prospect to this dissertation.
