Rock-fill impervious face dam is a main type of earth dams. It has advantages of strong adaptability, easy access to construction material, machine construction, short construction period and low cost, etc. It has been widely used in the design of hydraulic structural engineering, and much practical experiences and research results have been achieved. It is very competitive in the selection of dam types. In the engineering design, selection of the dam type is very important, especially in the area of strong earthquakes. For a rock-fill impervious face dam, the stress and deformation of the impervious membrane and the rock fill are the most sensitive part of the dam, their design safety is very important for dam seepage and stability. This thesis first analyzed the type and performance of rock-fill impervious face dams in strong earthquake area in the country and abroad, which provided reference for selection of dam type in the Xiatianji reservoir area; static and dynamic 3 axial testing were performed for different design scheme; stress and strain, as well as permanent deformation and dynamic stability of the dam under a 8th scale earthquake were studied using a 3-d finite element nonlinear calculation method. The pattern of stress and strain distribution of the rock-fill dam is revealed through the calculation and analytic study, which provides important basis for design of the dam structure and its antiseismic stability. This research has important reference value for design and construction of similar engineering works.
