With the fast rise of urban economy, commercial buildings have enjoyed an unprecedented development and expansion period. During this period, shopping mall has come to be the first choice for consumption and entertainment due to its below features: composite, customer oriented and one-stop style which means all kinds of demands will be met in the shopping mall. The most attractive feature, architecturally, is its spacious and flamboyant public room. This thesis will focus on the public space design shopping mall, considering the status quo of commercial building trends and problems of existing shopping malls in China and compared with those of advanced nations.Consumers are actually the main users of shopping malls. This paper will analyze the interaction of commercial building environment and consumers' behavior psychology, and find the effect of commercial building environment on consumes' psychology so as to construct a foundation for a better shopping mall designing theoretically.There are two types of shopping malls in term of layout: pedestrian mall and closed shopping mall. For pedestrian mall designing, the focus is the outer public layout strategy, emphasizing the study of squares and streets. While for the latter, closed shopping mall, the focus is the inner layout strategy, emphasizing atrium and corridors. In this paper, case study has been carried out and will benefit the study of forming elements, spacing mold and design features of public room in the shopping malls. Furthermore, an evaluation principle will be set for public room designing.Last but not the least, apart from physical or material designing study, a further discussion from cultural, social and economic perspectives will compliment public room designing strategy.
