The container carrier is the fastest growing factor in today's shipping and shipbuilding industry. The industry is also significantly promoted by the continuous development of bigger and faster new ships sincere the emerging of Post-panama container carrier. At the same time, the advancing step of Panama type container carrier does not halted during this advancing tide especially after the emerging of Panamax type container carrier. The Chinese ship building industry now has the ability to build almost all class container carriers after its long terms effort and technical accummulation. However, there are several blanks on Chinese container ship building history. The Panamax type container is one of blanks and until now, it still in initial researching and developing stage.This thesis is to investigate main design challenges, including general arrangement, propulsion performance and main outfitting system, of Panamax type container carrier on the basis of foreign shipyard's successful design and building experience to meet the requirement of fleet expansion plan of China Ocean Shipping Co. After a series study and tank model test, the main technical problems, such as main dimension, general arrangement, necessary systems for target vessel and propulsion performance, have been successfully resolved. This preliminary researching and development on the new Panamax container carrier not only provide a powerful technical support for the newbuilding contracting of ship, but fill a blank record in today's Chinese ship building industry. It also provides a feasible way for R&D of new ship by the cooperation between shipping company and shipyard (designer).
