Slope is a natural geography widely exists in the world. Reforms of the nature also lead to vast artificial slopes. Under the effect of inner force and various external loads, the stress-strain relationship of the slope is continuously changing and leads to kinds of distabilizing accidents. Accidents of slumping spread across the world, bringing in great loss to many countries and districts. Therefore, it is an important content of rock and soil engineering to study the stability of slopes. The region of the slope of Dong-Gang combined pumphouse located in Dong-Gang town of Wa-fang-dian city, Liaoning province. It lies on hilly ground. The relief is high in the north, and low in the south, forming three steps of bench terrace, with the high mark of 34m, 20m and 8m. The slope is 1200 meters long, 12 meters high, and breakthroughs the whole region. It has actual values to research on the stability of the combined pumphouse slope. At the present, evaluation methods applied in slope engineering mainly contain qualitative analysis methods and quantitative analysis methods. Quantitative analysis methods are chiefly consist of rigid body limiting equilibrium method and numeric analysis methods. Among the former, Swedish section method, JANBU method and BISHOP are those mostly used in the engineering. These methods all have some assumption conditions and scope of application, so they should be chosen properly according to specific engineering. During numeric analysis methods, finite element method has been most widely used in engineering by now. With the development of computer technology, many kinds of large finite element analysis software have been generated and properly used in actual engineering. ANSYS is one of the most efficient large software. It can be widely used in oil chemical industry, aerospace, mechanical made, electronic, civil engineering, biomedicine and some other general industries and scientific researches. The paper simply introduces relevant content of limiting equilibrium method and finite element method, and uses these two methods to analyze the slope stability.Main rock character of the pumphouse slope is granite, and specifically is decency sand, intensive decency granite and medium decency granite from top to down. The decency boundary is determined by collected data of drilling holes. The paper gets physical mechanical parameters on the basis of field investigation and indoor experiment, and make references of adjacent engineering. These parameters contain elastic ratio, poisson ratio, bulk density, conhensive force and internal friction angle. And then the stability of the slope is analyzed according to excavation grade ratio of 1:1.5 and 1:2.0. First of all, the stability of the slope is analyzed by limiting equilibrium method. Using Swedish section method, JANBU method, BISHOP method of circular sliding method and linear sliding method, it calculates the stability factor and broken mode under four kinds of work conditions, considering the factor of water and earthquake. When considering the effect of water, the stability is calculated according to saturated condition. Then we compare and find the rule of stability factor and broken mode, and analyze its stability. After that, we use finite element method to analyze the stability. Model is built according to the shape of the slope, while horizon length and vertical length of the model is identified by influence range of the slope. Corresponding physical mechanical parameters are imputed, graticules are meshed, restrains and loads are applied on. We use reduced intensity of finite element method to calculate the slope stability under four kinds of grade ratio, considering the factor of water and earthquake. Corresponding stability factor and condition of plastic strain are acquired. When considering the effect of water, the stability is calculated according to saturated condition. While considering the factor of earthquake, we use analog static method. Comparing and analyzing displacement graph, stress graph and strain graph in the post treatment, we can get maximum displacement, stress, strain and the condition of plastic strain, and analyze the stability. Finally, the stability of the slope is appraised by synthetically analyzing the results of both methods, and corresponding treating means are offered. The paper uses finite element method to analyze the stability of the slope, fully considers the stress-strain relationship of the rock and soil, and overcomes the shortage of rigid limiting equilibrium method. Comparing the result of these two methods, we get the stability condition of the slope, and provide scientific reference for engineering constructions. At last, considering some problems exist in the paper, several suggestions are offered for future research.
