The designing of Factories and mines distribution system is a complex project, including the designing of high-voltage distribution system, low-voltage distribution system and substation, in which calculation and analysis are included, and a number of drawings have to be protracted. This paper analyses the structure characteristics of factories and mines distribution system, and presents a project file system, which centers round project database, and includes various graphics files. The data is shared among these files. Based on the project file system, a viable model of CAD system is established, in which, geographic information map is protracted, load data is added in graphic method, and load calculation, substation optimization location, network topology, conductor cross-sections are completed at first. And then, electrical wiring diagram is protracted, in which the selection of equipment and the statistics of equipment are completed.Based on the characteristics of the tree network structure and the high ratio of resistance to reactance, power flow and short-circuit could be calculated without generating resistance or admittance matrix, and whose program is relatively easy. The initial locations of distribution stations are calculated by load-moment method, then using automatic optimization algorithm, the final locations are found. Network topology is optimized by the prim algorithm. Using economic current density method, the conductor cross-sections are selected, which are checked by marginal voltage cost method. The type and number of transformers, breakers and other equipment are selected according to certain rules, which are completed by users who are aided by the program with the data. The program provides equipment and materials statistics of whole project.The CAD system for factories and mines distribution is developed with VB, combining with database technology, and using AutoCAD developed secondarily as graphics system. The planning and design of factories and mines distribution system, graphics rendering, calculation and analysis are integrated to complete intelligently by the CAD system. Finally, the design process and results of a distribution system for the mining area, which using the CAD system, shows the feasibility and correctness of the system model and programming. The result is helpful to planning and design of factories and mines distribution system.
