FEA of the frame is an important topic in the field of automotive design. With the development of computer technology, FEA becomes the more and more important design method of automotive frame structure. Through numerical simulation, stresses, strains and vibration frequencies of the frame under various working conditions can be obtained, which provides scientific guidelines for structure designers. Therefore, FEA is helpful to improve design quality, to shorten the development period and to reduce development costs.The design criteria for frame FEA are put forward by the FEA of the frame of the 9t truck. The results of FEA were verified by MTS tests of a complete truck, reliability tests on the proving ground and stresses and vibration measuring tests. The structure design scheme of the frame of the 9t truck. was gotten by calculations. The reason for failure of the frame and its cross members was systematically analyzed, and a solution was put forward.As the channel-sectioned side frame has strong bending rigidity and weak torsional rigidity, the torsional rigidity of the whole frame is established jointly by bending rigidity of the side frame and torsional rigidity of the cross members. Damage of a cross member on account of thinning of the side frame tells us a design criterion of the frame: strength and rigidity must be considered at the same time in frame design.Finally, according to vibration control targets of the entire vehicle, the relationship between the frame vibration and vehicle vibration and noise performance is discussed; effects of frame modes of the 9t automotive. on entire vehicle vibration are analyzed with comParison with the frame of Benchmark vehicle; the solutions to control vehicle vibration is presented, and design rule for frame elastic body modes are created.
