Geosynthetics is a new material of geotechnical engineering. It has been widely applied in highway construction in these years, especially applied in building embankment on soft clay ground. The analysis of slope stability in engineering practice has been made dominantly with Total Stress Analysis method up to nowadays, but as a matter of fact, the state of stress on critical slip surface is not in agreement with that of real ones taking no account of the change of distributing of stress and the relationship between stress and strain, as the Total Stress Analysis method only considers the integral unit stress of soil mass. The reinforcement mechanism between geosynthetics and soil is not clear, the theory research obviously can't catch up with the application of geosynthetics in engineering. The lag of theory and design method limits the further use of geosynthetics in the project. The type characteristic of geosythetics and the application in subgrade engineering are outlined. Then, an overview of reinforcement mechanism and failure form of reinforced embankment with soft clay ground are presented. The design method, calculation model and finite element method of reinforced embankment are elaborated. The finite element method for the embankment reinforced by geogrids with soft clay ground has been carried out using the commercial software ANSYS. D–P model are selected as soil constitutive model and the geosynthetics are regarded as only can bearing tensile force but not owning flexural rigidity while the interface elements have been used between geosynthetics and soil. The classical Coulomb's rule is adopted as the constitutive model of the interface tangential force. The influence of stress field and displacement field are analysed by way of comparing reinforced embankment with unreinforced embankment. Then, the structural performance of reinforced embankment with soft clay ground are studied, namely, influence of reinforcement factors such as modulus of geogrids, number of geogrid layers, layout of geogrids, angle of internal friction and thickness of sand cushion on the result of reinforcement. Reasonable resolvent according to different operating mode are brought forward. The research result is of certain reference value to engineering of reinforced embankment with soft clay ground.
