Northern power grid of Yulin, the important part of the Yulin power grid, Mainly includes 110kV as its primary grid. For various reasons, the present state contains that the weak structure of power grid, low level power supply reliability, bad flexibility and operation diseconomy. Since this area is known as the energy source and chemical base, both power supply capability and load level have gone up in a high rate. The research of Volt/VAr optimazation in Northern power grid of Yulin has significant meaning for ameliorating the Var power distribution, decreasing the operation loss of the area power grid, rising the voltage eligibility rate and improving the voltage quality.Optimal volt/VAr control (VVC) in distribution systems can result in reactive power optimization (RPO), power/energy loss reduction, as well as power quality improvement. It is great importance to voltage quality guarantee, power loss minimization. This paper also studies the application of three heuristic algorithms, which are Tabu Search (TS), Simulated Annealing (SA) and Genetic Algorithm (GA), in optimal volt/VAr control in distribution systems. Analyses and comparisons of the three algorithms are presented. And TS, SA and GA are improved for the VVC problem.A novel algorithm based on Reactive Tabu Search (RTS) is proposed for VVC in distribution systems. The application of RTS in the VVC in distribution systems is extensively studied. And the details of RTS for the problem are given. Compared with the three adaptive methods, RTS is more effective.Simulations of RTS and the three modified modern heuristic methods on 14-bus, 83-bus distribution system, and northern power grid of Yulin system are given. The results show the effectiveness of the four algorithms. Comparison of the results indicts RTS's remarkable advantages in computation speed and effectiveness over TS, SA and GA. Therefore, RTS is more suitable for the problem.
