Container shipping, as a modernized transporting, combining science and technology management, develops most actively and potentially in the transportation system. But the characteristics of container shipping, such as fixed route, strict regularity, high speed, docking frequently, big power plant, and so on, proposes to its power plant higher request compared to other type of ship. Therefore, in order to guarantee the sailing time, it is very important to maintain its power plant reasonably.The maintenance of the equipments on board, is a rather attention-getting issue for the marine engine department of each shiphandling company. But the maintenance to these equipment that adopted by the marine engine department, at present, just according to the instruction booklet which get from the manufactory, the experience of old crew, as well as the international or domestic conventions and rules, and many of them are Maintenance after failure and the regular Maintenance . These Maintenance are disadvantaged, moreover waste resources and have bad influence on the improvement of crew quality.In order to keep the equipments in good order, we should carry on the preventive maintenance, but the most important problem in the process of preventive maintenance, is how to determine the maintenance period. A reasonably determined preventive maintenance period will bring significant function in guaranteeing the efficiency, the security and the economy of the running system, and is very important to the maintenance of the ship, whether the periods are scientific or not to a great extent affects the maintenance results. Therefore, it is very important to determine scientific and reasonable maintenance period for guaranteeing the maintenance effect, lengthening the service life of equipment then to safeguard the ships normal transport business and improving the economic efficiency.Based on the information of domestic and foreign ship maintenance system, this article analyzes the development and the transporting characteristics of container ship, starts from maintenance management of power plant on container ship, compares the characteristics of existing maintenance system, in view of the particularity of container ship, using the Monte-Carlo simulation principle, designs the model of best preventive maintenance period of container ships power plant, proposed 3 kinds of solution preventive maintenance period models: based on the equipment impairment grade forecast model, based on the equipment availability and based on the equipment maintenance cost, and using software Visual Basic 6.0 designs the best preventive maintenance period computation program, realizing its simulation computation. This program may provide the more accurate reference value for maintenance work about container ship power plant.
