Making an in-depth research of famous foreign architects has become an effective method for introducing advanced architectural theories.The famous American architect Steven Holl' s design is based on phenomenology and not confined within modernism or decadence, but focuses on our perception of phenomena like material, light, smell, texture, space, etc. By introducing his design background and architectural conception, reading and analyzing his works, this thesis studies his unique ways and ideas of design, expounding his understanding of the relationship between place, colors, light and architectures. The author hopes to supply some new views to Chinese modern design of architecture.This thesis is divided into three parts:Part one introduces Holl' s life experience, the origin of his design concept, his design concept and style; in order to dissect his design characteristic, part two expounds Holl' s unique methods and ideas by analyzing and studying his works; part three analyzes three of Holl' s architectures in China, and summaries the referential use of his design ideas and works to Chinese architecture design.
