Entered WTO along with China, the world architects start to enter the Chinese market. Some outstanding architects have brought their experience, the thought, the advanced design idea and the method. This is positive for the development of China. Steven Holl is one of them. He is one of the few famous architects who unify the philosophy idea and the architectural design in America. He is engaged in the architectural design through the phenomenology thought and the typology method, and enriches his design idea unceasingly. He cares about the society, the culture and the tradition. He collects and studies the types and the forms in the traditional history, and explores perception's influence to experience the architecture. Holl's exploration is important to the architecture field.As a noncommercial architect, Steven Holl's design and practice is always a validation of his theory, or an avant-garde experiment. When the architects surpass after the simple material stratification, they always seek one kind of theory to support their concept, and lead their design practice. This paper takes the Country Natural Sciences Fund Project"Construction from Constitution Analysis and Graphical Representation Language Research"in a topic part. It mainly discusses Holl's research production in the architecture thought and the design practice. And it takes his works as examples proceed to expatiate.This paper includes five chapters which divide into three parts:The first part (first chapter) proposed the paper's research object, the research content, the research method, the research goal and the significance and so on.The second part (second to four chapters) , from the typology, the phenomenology as well as the morphosis three angles, has carried on the analysis and the induction to Holl's architecture thought and works, and elaborated a confluence of his design ideas and the experience phenomenon.The third part (fifth chapter) summarized Holl's architectural design thought to our enlightenment, pointed out the problems of the architectural theory in the applied research in our country, and puts forward the proposal.
