Waterfront area is the significant place where leisure activities occur in Hangzhou, which city is embraced by four big water bodies (West Lake in the middle, Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal in the north, Qiantang River in the east and Xixi National Wetland Park in the west). In order to promote the reputation of "International Leisure and Tourism City" and "Oriental Capital of Leisure" , and to enhance the strength of Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal' application for World Heritage, a great amount of leisure and recreation spaces have been constructed along Grand Canal recently.Since the multiplicity of original sources, developing background and procedure, the development pattern of the leisure and recreation space presents diversity along the Grand Canal of the Gongshu District section which is also be focused on in this paper. With the analysis of relevant plans, documents and almanac, four development patterns of leisure and recreation space are integrated and classified, and typical cases are cited to illustrate the respective pattern with different developing background, attractors/internal sources and evolution procedure. Meanwhile, the characteristics including land-use function, facilities and sites, operation groups and exploitation types will be compared and summarized. According to the SWOT analysis study and experience from cases of other cities, this paper also discuss the improving method and suggestion to the development patterns of leisure and recreation space along the Grand Canal of the Gongshu District section. Additional to this, the spatial layout optimization of leisure and recreation space development patterns along the Grand Canal of the Gongshu District section and the development patterns matching of the leisure and recreation space of four main water bodies of Hangzhou have been conducted.
