As a world heritage, the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal is an important treasure left over from the development of human society and represents the crystallization of ancient human wisdom in China.Canals and settlements along canals affect each other.Cities arise from transportation and cities are excavated from transportation. The excavation and converted of the Grand Canal brought great changes to the natural and social environment of the settlement along the river basin at that time, which affected the formation and development of the surrounding towns, while the development of society and the construction of cities also affected the use and function of the canal. Therefore, exploring the spatial distribution of settlements along the canal, analyzing their influencing factors and making full use of these factors can be conducive to the reuse of modern canals.Firstly, this paper defines the relevant concepts, defines the scope and methods of the research object, analyses the background and summarizes the research framework through field visits and research,as well as access to relevant data and historical records.Secondly,it correctly understands and summarizes the existing research contents, and explores the background and evolution process of the Jining section of the BeijingHangzhou Grand Canal according to the analysis conclusions.Thirdly, based on the previous analysis and research, this paper chooses the historical development stages which are more valuable for research, and studies the spatial distribution of canal settlements in each stage under the background of the transformation of urban "economic-social" structure, urban development changes and canal function changes.Using the buffer analysis method of GIS and spatial measurement method based on gradual scale, the spatial relationship between Jining section of the Grand Canal and its settlements in different historical stages is analyzed qualitatively, quantitatively, horizontally and vertically, and the spatial evolution of settlements along the Grand Canal in each stage is summarized. Finally, combined with the analysis and summary of the previous parts, the influencing factors are analyzed from the angles of nature, society, economy, politics and the canal itself, which provides a theoretical basis for the development and construction of towns and villages around the Grand Canal in the future.
