The Beijing-Hang Zhou Grand Canal is the earliest and longest artificial river in the world. It flows from north to south, which was the main artery of water transportation (North-South direction) in history. The Grand Canal is a great water conservancy project in ancient China which connects five major water systems, the only water system in China that runs in a direction from south to north, and has made great efforts to the development and exchange of politics, economy and culture between north and south. And people regard it and the Great Wall as the two greatest ancient engineering projects. The Beijing-Hang Zhou Grand Canal has not only played a major role in the development of Hang Zhou which is the southernmost end of the Canal, but also has left it abundant cultural connotation. However, from the modern times, with the development of society of society and economy, both the function o f the Canal and prosperous commercial culture on both sides of the Canal have gradually being faded out, and still the humanities view is also not what it was. Meanwhile, due to the development of industry along the both sides, industrial wastewater and domestic sewage has been directly discharged into the Canal which caused a serious deterioration to water; long-term's evolution of use of earth and serial stage of construction have also led to the sprawl of use of earth, and then landscape on both sides has been greatly reduced. As a result, the value of landscape, ecology and historical culture has not been reflected. With the change function of the Canal and the concern of the protection of Beijing-Hang Zhou Grand Canal heritage which was aroused by project of the South-North Water Diversion, the Canal greets the golden opportunities of the development and protection of landscape. At the same time, although the history and landscape value of the Canal has been gradually recognized, it is still difficult to avoid such practice to ignore the geographical features and simply copy the scheme model in the landscape design of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal (Hangzhou section). In such a background, this paper rethinks the relationship between protection and development of the Canal's landscape from its own construction, through a comprehensive and systematic analysis to the current situation and development trend o f the protection of the Canal's landscape in order to offer reference to other cities in the protection of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal. Starting from elaborating the reason why choose the landscape on both sides of the Canal as the research object, the purpose and significance o research, this paper firstly introduces the history o landscape on both sides of the Canal, and focuses on the development of landscape of the Grand Canal (hangzhou section) in 1990s, so that lay a foundation for later protection of historical relics, and then through the research and reorganization of the existing historical relics of the Canal (Hangzhou section) on the spot, it explores how to protect the landscape of the Canal (Hangzhou section) by employing the method of Cultural Routes. Based on the above work, this paper makes an overall analysis to the landscape of the Canal's downstream area and Gongshu sector, Finally, it aims at reformation opinion in the scope of investigating, combing the successful experience of the protection and development of canal's landscape from home to abroad, and then put forward a long-term plan of the development of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal (Hangzhou section) ,in which development takes protection as premise, demand of city's landscape as a turning point, emphasizes its functionality, utility and ecology.Expectingthe renewed vitality and sustainable development of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal (Hangzhou section) so that we can protect and develop the Canal's landscape better.
