With the development of social economy, inland channel transportation has shown its advantage in energy saving, emission reduction and sustainable development. Conducting reconstruction and upgrading of channels, establishing complete inland channel network and improving the status of inland channel transport in the comprehensive transportation network places an importantant role in the sustainable development of economic society. Under the background of constructing a leading province in ports and channels and protecting the part of Beijing-Hangzhou Canal in Hangzhou City, with reference to other projects such as reconstructin of Beijing-Hangzhou Canal, Hangzhou-Shanghai Channel and Hangzhou-Ningbo Canal, enlargement of Fuchunjiang Lock, and other channel development projects in the middle and upstream of Qiantang River, this paper makes an optimization research on the alignment alternatives for the channel linking the Beijing-Hangzhou Canal and Qiantang River. This paper analyzes the situation and development plan of inland channels in China, foreign countries as well as in Zhejiang Province, makes an research on the natural and environmental conditions and illustrates the necessity and urgency of construting the second passage linking the Beijing-Hangzhou Canal and Qiantang River. Based on the social and economic investigation within the range of channel transport service, the tranport volume and design vessel have been predicted and the construction scale of Class III channel and 1000t ship has been put forward.According to the analysis of main factors affecting the channel alignment, like estury condition of Qiantang River, construction plan of cities and towns, conditions of existing road network and plan, hydrological conditions, two alternatives have been suggested, that is the east line and west line. The two alternatives have been analyzed and evaluated fully and the following conclusions have been obtained: In consideration of overall plan of Hangzhou City, ecological and environmental protection, project investigation, urgency and feasibility of reconstruction, the east line alternative is recommended because of less contradiction to the city plan, less demolishment and land occupation, less effect on the environment, better connection with the Hangzhou-Shanghai Channel, shorter distance to Shanghai and less cost. The conclusion described in the paper provides a scientific basis for the decision making of the project and will contribute to the execution of the project.
