Flywheel energy storage system(FESS) posses many advantages: large energy storage density, no pollution, rapid charge and discharge property, almost unlimited cycling life and easy to maintain characteristics. Applying FESS in wind generation systems (WGS) can bring tremendous advantages comparing to traditional battery energy storage system. This paper carried out a preliminary academic study of FESS applications in both stand-alone WGS and grid-connected WGS. For stand-alone WGS case in which FESS is operated as an energy storage unit, system structure and control technologies are designed and studied to improve utilization of wind energy and power quality of wind turbine generator unit. For grid-connected WGS case in which FESS is operated as an power compensation unit, proper design of system structure and control system are developed to realize an decoupling control of active power and reactive power generated by grid-connected wind turbine generators. For the two cases, simulations are given out in Matlab to show the validity of proposed control method.
