The Loft Culture And Old Workshops' Adaptable Design

As the human society enters in Post-Industry Periods during the end of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st century, the technology is developing sharply. The changing of industry structure,the moving of finance and the differences in social life style, the development of city space experienced huge changes. Some traditional heave-industry bases had failed down with wasting and destruction on natural resources. The ground of replacement, large areas of tearing up and rebuilding of constructions have wiped the old city appearance and updated the city, but also brought destruction and waste of money in some degree. How to reduce the negative aspects in the process of constructing a city, what is the right attitude towards the reconstruction of industry-architectures with long history and culture, are becoming popular topics among architects.In the past 10 years, Loft culture has been introduced in China from the west, which is a kind of brand-new model of protection and re-development of old industrial architectures. In architecture, Loft means re-constructed open space, comes from un-living style, in order to keep the basic style of buildings. It originated from SOHO space in New York; artists were resident of these building. Soon, developer had found the countless opportunities from these old buildings and re-decorated them for selling or rent, finally, this movement brought the business of Loft and renewal of the whole SOHO space. Business of Loft had solved the funds problems happened in historic reconstruction; meanwhile, the naturalness, realism and romance of the space art of Loft culture have already deeply influenced the renovation of the old constructions. Loft provided the cities a new possibility for their self-development and healthy renewal.Beginning with searching for the solutions for renewing old workshop, the first chapter is introduction. And the second one explained the concept of Loft Culture, discussed the arising of the culture, and together with historical events, analyzed the naissance, the development and the final commercialization of Loft culture in the first chapter. In the third chapter, using several space examples of Loft, the paper analyzed the characteristics in Loft space and the meaning and contribution of Loft culture. In the fourth chapter, on discussing the history of industrial construction, the paper analyzed the value of Loft culture in the aspect of the culture of industrial construction and that of the renewal of old industrial construction. In the fifth chapter, through studying the history of renewal of the old workshop constructions in the west and in China, the paper brought clear the direction, the critical points before the evaluation of renewal, the principal of the renovation. In the sixth chapter, the paper summed up the renewal of old workshop in the aspect of space form design, form style design, and environment sight design, combined with deep analysis about the examples.
