In this research, drinking water quality of the entire water supply system in Shenzhen during the last three years and its variation is investigated. In addition, an integrated model is presented to modeling the whole process of source water, treatment plant and distribution network. By using information technology, the information of drinking water supply system is integrated, including source water quality, plant operation, water quality in treatment plant and distribution network, which can ensure the drinking water safety all the time.First, water quality monitoring data of 46 water treatment plants and 260 distribution network nodes at Shenzhen are investigated from January 2004 to April 2007. The variation and relationship of the water quality indexes is demonstrated. It is quite often that the source waters degrade suddenly, even though they are good at the most of time. Sometimes the extent of variation is so great that it would strike the plant operation and results in fluctuation of drinking water quality. Therefore, monitoring data such as DO and ammonia nitrogen can give advance warning of problems. Then, take Central Town Water Plant for example, the fluctuation of water quality during treatment process is analyzed.Artificial neural networks are used to modeling the water supply system, and predicting performance of full-scale water treatment plant, according to the source water quality and treatment parameter. Furthermore, the network architecture is designed based on prior knowledge. This model integrates modules which represent individual steps of conventional treatment processes. As a result, the quality of finished water can be estimated on the basis of monitoring data of source water quality at the moment of raw water inflowing, 0.5 hour prior to influent water and 8 hours prior to effluent water. Finally, the software for the integrated drinking water quality management is developed, composed of data collecting module, management work station, water quality database and operation management system. The system is constructed based on Browser/Server framework with integration drinking water quality standard, water quality monitoring, source water quality, treatment process, as well as early warning system of source water quality, which can ensure the drinking water safety all the time.
