As a new kind of lateral resisting element in medium and high-rise building, steel plate shear wall(SPSW)has exhibited many desirable characteristics, such as high initial stiffness, high load-carrying capacity, good ductility and excellent energy absorption capacity. Lots of work has been done to investigate the post-buckling and elastic buckling behavior of unstiffened thin steel plate shear walls and stiffened steel plate shear walls. The study on steel shear wall with slits and holes is initial stage. Based on the previous research work done on steel shear wall with slits, the hysteretic behavior of steel shear wall with slits and holes has been studied theoretically and experimentally in this paper. Main research contents are listed as follows:Two one-story single-bay steel shear walls with slits and holes of roughly one-third of full scale with panel slenderness ratio of 386 were tested under low cyclic lateral load in order to investigate the hysteresis loops, skeleton curve, ductility and energy dissipation characteristics etc. The steel shear walls with slits and holes showed high lateral stiffness, excellent displacement ductility and energy dissipation characteristics.A nonlinear finite element model for steel shear wall with slits and holes was developed using the as-built dimensions in order to simulate the test. The effective and validity of the model were demonstrated by comparing its cyclic load condition with experimental results. The finite element analysis of the specimens provided a sound foundation for further research of this kind of steel shear wall. The hysteretic behavior of steel shear wall with slits and holes under low cyclic load has been studied using the finite element method. It was influenced by many factors, such as panel slenderness ratio, aspect ratio of panel between slits and stiffness of side stiffener to panel etc. The research of hysteresis loops and energy dissipation characteristic showed that steel shear wall with slits and holes was an excellent lateral resisting element.
