TCSC, simple in structure and low in cost, has received much attention due to its outstanding performances in damping the power system low-frequency oscillations, optimizing the flow distribution, and improving transmission lines capacity and system stability. The adaptability of TCSC to various work conditions is a key issue in applying TCSC in the practical electric power system, and the controller design is very important for TCSC.This thesis analyzes the structure of TCSC, and discusses the principles of TCSC damping control. Then TCSC damping controllers are designed for multi-machine systems and an adaptive fuzzy damping controller is designed for a SGIB (Single Generator Infinite Bus). Simulation models of multi-machine systems and SGIB system with TCSC are built with MATLAB. Simulation results show that the proposed TCSC damping controllers have good performances and are quite robust.
