Meter-reading based on power line is an automatic scheme that can most meet the characteristics of a power system. The key point is that the automatic meter-reading system must be characteristic of low cost and high-quality communications. In this thesis we aim to accomplish modulation and demodulation through software by taking the ATMEGA series processors as the core. There are quite few external circuits in this system. Carrier communication, management of power pulses, intelligent meter-reading and communication protocols, etc., all are achieved by utilizing ATMEGA series processor. In such a way it not only has the advantage of high integration and low communication cost, but also can calculate the parameters related to carrier channel in favor of carrier relay meter-reading. At the same time, it has a strong flexibility and is quite convenient for various function developments such as the circuit of dual-frequency communication. Surely the communication performance can be improved considerably.
