Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) is an algorithms based on the stochastic optimization. It was raised by James Kennedy, American social psychologist, and Russell Eberhart, electrical engineer. As PSO algorithm's calculation speed and easy implementation, a lot of related researchers are concerned about it.Substation location plan plays important role in the power system plans. Whether the location is chosen rationally will infect the economic, safety and reliable of power system. And it will also be relative of the power system plans in future. The factors that infect the substation location include quantization factors and non-quantization factors. They were treated separately in the traditional substation location problems. A new substation location model is proposed, which is composed with quantization factors and non-quantization factors.Through learning basic principles, advantages and disadvantages of PSO, and combined with the substation site selecting problem, there are two improved strategies for basic PSO.(1)Focus of initial solutionAccording to the substation site characteristics, here is an effective method for optimal initial solution. Select the homogenization initial solution by the focus formula. Because the optimal substation location is always near the focus, the initial solution is composed with the focus and the random. And the focus also includes global focus and local focus.(2)Variable searchBy getting the individual optimal solution during the iterative, Basic PSO algorithm will update the location and speed, then continues the next iterative. That may run out of the optimal solutions. A simple improvement is proposed that will take a variable search on left, right, up or down after the current iterative, compare with its own optimal, and update the individual and globe optimal solution.The improved PSO is used in the new model and effects on the optimal substation location.
