With the increasing development of technology, the gradual improvement of productive force, the accelerative renewal of products and the more intense market competition, enterprises are required on the one hand to improve product quality and increase product varieties in order to meet consumer demand, and on the other hand, to shorten the time-to-market and reduce the cost as possible as they can, which makes the rapid design aiming at shortening the development cycle of the product design a key technology in the market competition.In this paper, the methods of the rapid design, the parametric design and the 3D CAD design are introduced briefly, and the ways of realizing the implementation of the modular and the parametric rapid design are explained. Based on these methods, the model of the engine gear system is built, and the rapid design of it is achieved.In the process of the system development, firstly, the function of the system is analyzed, and the components of the system are decided, which can be departed into two modules—gear design and 3D modeling module according to the user need. There are four subareas in the gear design module: design calculation, geometric calculation, strength check and accuracy enquiries; and three subareas in the 3D modeling module: the spur gear modeling, the helical gearmodeling and the compound gear modeling. Secondly, based on the analysis above, the gear transmission technology and the selection of the tool of the system development are introduced briefly, and the key technologies used in system are set forth detailed including how the data of the engineering manual processed, how the database referenced to and the second-development of the Pro/TOOLKIT technology. Finally, the concrete process of realization of each module is discussed in this paper, in which the Window XP is used as platform, the Pro/ENGINEER is as the 3D modeling, Visual Basic6.0 and Visual C++6.0 are as the tool of second-development and the Access2003 is as the database. At last, the practicability of the system is proved with an example of the engine gear system.By adopting the methods of the modular and the parametric design in the system, a great many of branches of the program is avoided, the visualization and autoimmunization of the design work are realized, the system is achieved interactively, the efficiency and accuracy of the design and modeling are heightened and the design and revision of the products are made more convenient and faster, which all establish a better foundation for succulent process, manufacture, assembly and test. This paper has some practical value in raising design efficiency of the engine gear system, improving the quality of the design and reducing the design cost. At the same time it provides the useful reference for the other complicated systems of the rapid design.
