Energy is the basic resource to the development of human society. However, the reserve of energy is often limited. Until the end of 2003, the constructed building area in China is up to 40,000,000,000 m~2. The constructed building area in the city is 14,000,000,000 m~2, in which 9,000,000,000 m~2 is housing. The prospective newly built area from now to 2020 will be 40,000,000,000 m~2, including 13,000,000,000 m~2 in the city. Building consumption takes 27.47% in the total energy consumption in 2003, comparing to 10% in 1978. It also keeps increasing. Saving energy in buildings will be the most important part to increase the efficiency in energy use of the whole society. Therefore, promoting energy saving in buildings is essential to the economical and social development.Saving energy includes using new materials and technologies. This article first analyzes the housing development, housing energy consumption and energy saving methods in China. It discusses the methods of building envelope, including wall insulation, roof insulation and window insulation. It emphasizes the using of renewable energy like solar energy and terrestrial heat to provide houses hot water and heating. Then it introduces the case study of "普利·艾伦庄园" in Ma An San. It introduces the master plan of this project and analyzes the lighting and ventilation of the buildings. This project calculates the aspect ratio of the building shape, window area to wall area, and insulates the exterior walls. It uses solar energy to provide hot water, and uses terrestrial heat to provide heating and cooling. The energy saving effect is significant because of the utilization of solar energy and terrestrial heat. This article researches the theory and case study of energy saving technologies. By discussing a case study, it provides comprehensive design methods for housing. It discusses the typical building model and utilization of renewable energies for buildings in cold climate zone..
