Functional Reinstallation As The Strategy Of Public Space Expansion In Inner City

As a city with long and abundant history,Berlin has been confronted with the challenge of urban regeneration in its inner city.This dissertation focuses on the phenomenon of public space expansion by the means of reusing existing urban structure.The research is based on the observation and analysis on the six case studies of courtyard house reuse in Berlin,especially on their strategies of renovation. A discussion is carried out in the present thesis on the strategies leading to a successful combination of preservation and function resetting.With plenty of investigation on site and deductive analysis,the thesis is mean to bring Shanghai and other domestic cities valuable experience on inner city regeneration.The thesis consists of two parts with four chapters.The first part is for introduction and necessary description for the cases,including chapterâ… focusing on the general background of courtyard house development and the regeneration took place in the center of Berlin,while chapterâ…¡is dealing with the detail of six case studies.The second part is mainly for analysis,with a synthetical discussion for the critical factors in renovation in chapterâ…¢and a survey for the affects on public space expansion on regional redevelopment level.The conclusion on Berlin's experience is presented in the finality,with a comparison between cases in Berlian and the current renovation practice in Shanghai.
