Google Earth is a kind of three-dimensional earth software developed by Google Company. It is a large database and data source which can bring people visual convulsion. According to my academic knowledge and the study on the geographical graphics and functions supplied by the software .I introduce the software to the field of road planning and design. Because there is not much research on using Google Earth to this field both oversea and internal, I just do some groping work on the basic of the lack of experiences.There are four parts below:Part one introduces the applications of Google Earth both oversea and internal, analyses the feasibility to use it on engineering, and presents the characteristics of the graphics objects and program language.Part two inosculates the system of AutoCAD and Google Earth on the basic of the former research, then builds up the graphics switch and coordinates switch between the two systems.Part three introduces the applications of the software in the area of road planning and design. Firstly I set up an example of Xianning road, build up the three-dimensional model so I can watch the three-dimensional road line and analyse how the line design influence on the traffic security. Then I set up an example of Luoyang development zone, build up the three-dimensional architecture models, and put them into Google Earth, analyze the adaptability to the whole environment and the adjustability of the whole city.Part four studies the twice development of Google Earth using C++, and extends the application function of Google Earth combining the GE COM API function.There are three problems resolved: first, the format switch of graphics objects between AutoCAD and the Google Earth; second, the coordinates switch of graphics objects; three, the user-defined orientation controlling query. The thesis build up a contact between Google Earth and the traditional design software and of great innovative and referenced value.
