Modern city traffic has an obvious impact on inhabited environment in terms of noise, air and security, especially the residential areas and city amalgamated dwellings around transportation facilities. Up to now, most of researches about the influences of transportation on residential environment are related to viaduct and rail traffic mode, such as railway, subway. They usually focus on the studies of three aspects: noise, vibration and vehicle emission. However, they seldom touch upon the influences of other transportation facilities on residential environment, like bus station, passenger transport station. This research aims at study the disadvantage of transportation facilities on surrounding inhabited environment and excavates the inhabited environment requirement of the residents, and put forward planning, architectural as well as environmental design strategy correspondingly, which can provide a reference for the interrelated residential areas and residential design. The methods of literature studies, field research, questionnaire surveys, and analytic comparison are used in the dissertation. Firstly, studying and analyzing the research findings and public information available both in China and foreign countries. Secondly, with the method of qualitative and quantitative analyzing, through observing environmental behavior, questionnaire survey and interview, combined with photograph, picture and literature consult, I do the survey in many residential areas and amalgamated dwelling around transportation facilities in Wuhan, analyze the disadvantages of principal traffic line, passenger station and the integration of various transportation routes and summarize different kinds of psychological conditions and behaviors of urban residents, who live in the special transportation environment. And through the comparison of different cases, I analyze the reason of the distinction and try to solve the problem in a comprehensive way. Through the investigation, I affirm all sorts of physical and mental impact of transportation facilities on inhabited environment, including the physical environment impact which has become consensus, such as noise, vibration and off-gas pollution, and residents' mental impact which has been lay special emphasis on, such as security anxiety, vision impact and absence of activity space. Some improvement measures are proposed from different aspects for the problems mentioned before, such as making headwall frontage, entry deviating from transportation facilities, intensifying entry design, constructing adequate outdoor activity space, setting up green belt, improving landscape design and promoting self-identity and sense of belonging of residential areas. I hoped that this paper can provide some useful references for the residential building and the surrounding environment design.
