With economic development, the process of urbanization steps faster and the construction of the residential areas is also expanded. Under this background, people have higher and more specific requirements for the software and hardware conditions in the residential areas. However, there exist a lot of blind areas and defects in the present residential areas in our country. There are severe phenomena of mutual plagiarism among design. Therefore, there is phenomenon of modeling and similarity. There are some other works which blindly pursue "exotic style " and exactly copy the foreign design, leading to the loss of native culture and personalized design style with characteristics. So new social problems arise:Residents have no sense of "home"; indifferent relationship among neighbours; residents feel lonely; lack of humanity; loss of sense of mental dependence, security and belonging to the living environment; the public leisure facilities perform no practical function and are rarely used, etc. The constant emergence of crisis and problems is a typical embodiment of lack of sense of belonging. It is an urgent issue at present that how to enrich the content of modern residential landscape design with advanced theories and approaches. This paper explained the research background and meaning, analyzed and summarized the development, achievements and shortcomings of relevant research in home and abroad. By reading lots of literature, analysis of the components of sense of belonging which are sense of comfort, identification, security, communication, and accomplishment was made. It studied the physiological and psychological needs in residential space and the development of dwelling houses, making a theoretical basis for design approach.Through the theoretical analysis and research on the present environmental psychology, landscape science, ecology and sociology, the design principles and design methods for the design of residential landscape based on the residents’sense of belonging was put forward. The design principles include safety principle, aesthetic principle, participation principle, the identification principle and functional principle. Discussion was made respectively on the different design methods and related considerations of the elements of residential landscape (plants, water bodies, pavement, function places, etc.). And through a case analysis on the landscape design of a residential quarter(whose Chinese name is Tian Shui Hao Ting) with my participation, discussion on the feasibility was made from different aspects. Finally summaries and conclusion were made. This study expands thoughts for designers in the design of residential areas, offers more theories, and injects new vitality into the construction of residential areas. The idea of "people-oriented" was taken as the guiding ideology of landscape design of residential areas and the physiological and psychological needs of people was taken as the fundamental starting point. Meanwhile, the design principle and methods featured by enhancing residents’ sense of belonging in this paper offers a reference basis to the late landscape design and environmental psychology.
