Crowded traffic has become a new characteristic of big cities in China today, especially for the mountainous city like Chongqing. In Chongqing, people tend to use public traffic to make the trip, providing there is already a highly developed public traffic system. The strong economic growth in recent years has become a major force for the increase of traffic demanding, which produced great potential of development of the public traffic. However, varied problems such as highly overlapped route operation, inefficient management, and backward infrastructure have slowed down the pace.BRT (Bus Rapid Transit) is a new bus operation system between rail and conventional bus. It represents an integration and optimization of enhanced station, large bus, dedicated bus way, high-quality service, efficient operation, and ITS. According to the experiences around the world, BRT is an effective mass transit to improve the operational efficiency and service of public transport. This article aims to analyze the feasibility of implementing BRT in Chongqing, and bring forward possible execution and policy suggestions. At present, serious traffic congestion, environment pollution, and shortage of traffic source have become focuses in the country, which influenced greatly the national policy decision. In Chongqing, public traffic comes to the top 1 choice for the people to make the trip, because of the trip limitation caused by the special mountainous feature. The article starts with the present situation and problems of Chongqing public traffic, based on the city public traffic demand analyze and 2001-2010 Major Construction Plan of West Development, and elaborates on why it is so necessary and urgent to implement BRT, and what should be done to integrate BRT system planning with other plannings. The article also demonstrates the implementation feasibility by studying the patronage forecast of the urban Chongqing and BRT urban system layout. At the end, the article testify the implementation feasibility of BRT in Chongqing from several perspectives of engineering designing, economic analyze and operation management, by quoting the project of Gao Jiu Road BRT demonstration line. And it also brings forward suggestions on how to promote and construct BRT by utilizing road resources in existence to enable BRT to function as the trunk route transit, and what revolution should be carried out to optimize public transport management.
