| Courtyard House is the most traditional and characteristic architecture type in Beijing, which constitutes the basic fabric of the Old Beijing City. Focusing on the courtyard house in Beijing, this thesis studies its evolvement of new function type and the relationship between its architecture type and function type.The thesis is composed of six chapters. Chapter 1 begins by giving a brief introduction on the background of the topic, the significance and the relevant circumstances. Chapter 2 gives an overview on the evolvement of the architecture type and function type of Beijing courtyard house. Chapter 3 studies the main features of the Beijing courtyard house as an architecture type.Chapter 4 and Chapter 5 are the core chapters of the thesis. Chapter 4 focuses on one of the main trends of today's Beijing courtyard house-the extreme state of the traditional living function of courtyard house. As the main performance of this trend, the squatter dwellings in the courtyard house are very common in Beijing now. By a series of objective and neutral evaluation and analysis, this chapter tries to find out the value of these squatter dwellings in courtyard houses. Chapter 5 focuses on the other main trend of today's Beijing courtyard house-the injection of new function type. Modern living, hotel, bar, restaurant, workshop, museum, club, spa...have been injected into courtyard houses, other possibilities are also discussed in this chapter.Chapter 6 analyses the value and characteristics of these new courtyard types in contemporary Beijing on the basis of a large number of case researches. The author hopes this thesis can bring some useful inspirations to the evolvement of new courtyard type, and even the protection and rejuvenation of Beijing courtyard houses. |
